Mercy Hospital, organized by the Sisters of Mercy of Belmont, opened in 1906 with a 25 bed capacity in a small frame building behind St. Peter's Catholic Church. Mercy was the first white hospital to admit Negro patients in Charlotte. It was aided by Right Reverend Leo Haid, Abbot of Belmont Abbey. (Charlotte Remembers, p. 10)
